Do you have a candle that won't melt all the way to the edge?  By placing a candle hurricane over your tunneling candle, it will help distribute the heat more evenly which will allow your candle to melt nicer.  
Candle hurricanes are primarily used to help candles melt even, minimize drafts and reduce soot.
